Since August 20th, 2007, at least 20 detached human feet have been found on the coasts of the Salish Sea in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington, US. The first discovery, on August 20th, 2007, was on Jedediah Island in British Columbia. Feet have been discovered on the coasts of islands in British Columbia, and in the US cities of Tacoma and Seattle.Wikipedia
I’ve come across this story many times and it’s always intrigued me. Last night I dreamt about disembodied feet. Yes, I dream about weird things like that. I’m a total weirdo. This made me think that perhaps it’s time to delve deeper and post about it. I was captivated by headlines such as these:
Severed feet — still inside shoes — keep mysteriously washing up on Pacific Northwest shores.
The feet have been found on the Pacific Northwest shorelines, where the Salish Sea connects waterways along the west coasts of the United States and Canada.
After the first two feet — both right — were found in British Columbia just six days apart from one another, locals realised that something was untoward, and they notified police.
“Two being found in such a short period of time is quite suspicious,” Cpl Garry Cox of the Oceanside Royal Canadian Mounted Police told the Vancouver Sun in August 2007.
Sixteen detached human feet have been found since 2007 in British Columbia, Canada and Washington State. What I find interesting is that most of these have the right feet? The right foot? What does it mean and why are we seeing more right feet? All of them had been wearing running shoes and one foot was found in a hiking boot.
In one case that they looked at the B.C. Coroners Service, they confirmed that the shoe came with a dismembered foot. As with the others, there’s no telling for exactly how long the foot was in the water, but the regional coroner, Matt Brown, said the exact model of shoe had gone on the market after March 2013, indicating that it once belonged to someone who went missing between then and December.
Speculation increased, as recounted in a 2008 article in the Toronto Star:
- “Speculation ranges from natural disasters, such as the tsunami of 2004, to the work of drug dealers, serial killers and human traffickers.
- “One theory concerns a plane crash off Quadra Island three years ago with five men aboard. Only one of the bodies has been found.
- “Other theorists believe the coastline is being used as a body dump for organized crime activity; a third scenario is a serial killer is at work.”
The mystery of the human feet floating ashore in the Pacific Northwest, a phenomenon that has captivated residents, scientists and area law enforcement since 2007, continues. Experts have weighed in and have tried to provide explanations for these occurrences.
The investigation result was that the most likely explanation is that they’re coming from people who died by accident or committed suicide – and the feet are floating ashore in the Pacific Northwest simply due to Mother Nature.
In the U.S., one of these pairs belonged to a woman who jumped from a bridge. Of the two other U.S. feet identified, one foot belonged to a missing fisherman and the other of a depressed man who probably committed suicide.
Feet easily disarticulate and when they are attached to a flotation device such as a running shoe, they are easily washed ashore.Gail Anderson, co-director of the Centre for Forensic Research at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia
Subjected to the push and pull of its environment,” the bones of hands and feet are almost always the first to fall off. Another theory is that with the help of ocean currents these feet drifted across the Pacific following the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004.
So mystery solved right? I don’t think so. I still believe there is something else at play here. I’m really interested in serial killers so obviously my mind went there! So they say it’s solved but I am going to leave you with this.
Why did the feet only start turning up after 2007?
As per Gail Anderson, co-director of the Centre for Forensic Research at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia “Notice there are no feet washing ashore in stiletto heels or flip-flops. Why were all of the feet found wearing sneakers?“
I have questions that remain unanswered. I too find it strange that this all began in 2007 and suddenly numbers of feet are found on the shoreline, regularly… and yes, why were they all wearing running shoes? Is this a bizarre coincidence? I believe that at least part of these feet were victims of foul play. The work of a serial killer maybe? Only time will really tell…. For now, my answer is: It’s complicated.
If you’re a nut like me….. Go to Wikipedia to see a full list of each foot they found and their description and circumstances they were found under.

I too am intrigued by the psyche of serial killers. I will definitely be looking this up.
